'On Your Feet!' wows Tampa Bay

Well, its here, in our very own backyard (literally speaking), the Broadway musical “On Your Feet!” that is traveling throughout the United States after 780 smash hit performances at the Marquis Theatre on Broadway in New York since its inception in 2015. The opener, Tuesday evening, October 24; is one of seven shows scheduled for the Straz Center in downtown Tampa. Tampa is the fourth city to witness the musical since the national tour kicked off this year on September 22 in Buffalo, New York.

“On Your Feet!” is a well-written and thought out Broadway musical that takes us through the ups and downs encountered by Gloria and Emilio Estefan in their homeland Cuba and their newly adopted home in the United States - inclusive of family and record labels just to name a few - in their lives from youngsters to adulthood. An evening that combined humor, music, joy, sadness, triumphs, and disappointments all in one - reminiscence on life struggles to obtain personal and professional goals and happiness.

A total of 26 songs are marvelously incorporated into the 2.5-hour musical that ranges from solemn to festive moods. The flashbacks from the startup of the Miami Latin Boys that transpired into the Miami Sound Machine to what it is now the solo titled Gloria Estefan band. The musical even included four original Miami Sound Machine musicians, and a varied age group cast who all carried out superb singing, acting, and dancing. You just couldn't refrain from dancing in your own seat until the end when you’re enticed to get up ‘on your feet’ to join the 28 cast members and the 10 piece orchestra in the medley finale of some of the Estefan’s greatest hits.

Don’t miss out on this stupendous Broadway musical, my review falls short of what you’ll truly experience from it live, plus I don't want to reveal too much detail. “On Your Feet!” will be in Tampa until Sunday, October 29, tickets range from $45 to $120 not including applicable fees/charges. Tickets can be purchased at Straz Center online hereAdditional information about “On Your Feet” and tour dates can be obtained at “On Your Feet!” website here.

An evening of unity at Yandel & Friends Puerto Rico: We Are One benefit relief concert

Video credit Sharam De Jesús

No devastation will bring Puerto Rico down! Puerto Rico is rising, Puerto Ricans are united, strong, resilient…

There is so much that describes the little island and its fellow citizens with a huge heart after the fierce devastations it has encountered. A vast number of artists have been coming together in benefit relief concerts. This time it was urban artist Yandel who united fellow friends inclusive of singers, DJs, and social media gurus for his benefit relief concert -Yandel & Friends Puerto Rico: We Are One in Central Florida.

Video credit Victor Garcia

Fans of all nationalities traveled as far as Miami, Tampa, Melbourne and surrounding areas to Orlando, Florida to support the efforts of Yandel in an evening overruled by urban and trap music, with a salsa singer, and a pop artist or two. They were Christian Daniel, Alexis & Fido, Farruko, Wisin, Zion & Lennox, Chyno Miranda, GadieL, Jencarlos Canela, Jerry Rivera, Jory Boy, Jowell & Randy, LeJuan James, Molusco, Noriel, Pedro Capo, Spiff Tv, DJ Candy Boy, DJ Chino, DJ Nelson & Alberto Stylee who entertained a full house at the Amway Center for close to four hours.

Every performance was special, messages were uplifting, and videos of before and after the aftermath and relief efforts by fellow citizens from the mainland were heart-wrenching. One that hit home was Yandel’s intro video. I myself tried to maintain my composure but thinking of family and dear friends in Puerto Rico especially one - Liz Robert who lives in Salinas, PR with her three daughters and are also Yandel fans - I just couldn’t hold back my tears. (See first video)

Not only did Yandel unite his friends but he also reunited with his compatriot Wisin who for many years shared stages together for a beautiful closure to Puerto Rico: We Are One. And what a better ending, the flags of Puerto Rico being waved throughout the Amway Center but when Yandel and Wisin held one together on stage, no ending could have been better. The pride for Puerto Rico and its Puerto Rican American citizens is inevitable. We are not divided, we are united.

Yandel joined renowned salsa artist Marc Anthony and others in We Are One Voice (Somos Una Voz), a platform that unites the efforts of artists to raise awareness and help the victims of the most recent natural disasters. Proceeds from Puerto Rico: We Are One will be donated to this charitable alliance which is collaborating with various organizations that are already bringing help to the affected areas.

Didn’t make it to this emotional and historical relief concert, then no worries you can still make a donation to One Voice here

Were you there or at any of the benefit relief events please comment below - what was the best part, how did you feel, words of encouragement for Puerto Rico...

Que viva Puerto Rico, the enchanted island!
